Perceptions of Race on Video Game Covers

Timeline

2019-2020

About the project

Material such as video game covers are sometimes the first pieces of media people encounter before playing a game. In this project, I collaborated with undergraduate students from across the U.S. and a research mentor, Dr. Daniel L. Gardner, a doctoral graduate from University of California-Irvine. This research project was developed through the iSchool Inclusion Institute (i3 program), a research and professional development program for underrepresented students interested in Information Science. In this project, we explored people’s perceptions of race on video game covers and the implications on people’s perceptions of their own social identities, others’ social identities, and gameplay.

My role

This research project began in the summer of 2019 and continued through 2020. During the project, I served as the project manager for several months where I organized and assigned tasks, meetings, and paper writing. I also helped create and disseminate a survey and analyzed the survey data.
