I’m a third-year Ph.D. candidate at the University of Michigan’s School of Information (UMSI), where I’m advised by Dr. Julie Hui and part of the Socio-Technical Equity in Practice (STEP) lab. I explore the ways in which social media platforms may shape and be used for career development in a changing world of work. I’m particularly interested in the career narratives social media users encounter online and its potential effects on people’s career perceptions, aspirations, and decisions. A subset of my research examines social media influencers and their impact on aspiring entrepreneurs. I mainly rely on interpretivist approaches to qualitative data, such as semi-structured interviews, surveys, and content analysis. My work is situated in the fields of social computing, vocational psychology, and sociology.

I’m currently affiliated with the Socio-Technical Equity in Practice (STEP) lab and the iSchool Inclusion Institute (i3). I was previously affiliated with the Social Media Research Lab (SMRL), Marginality in Socio-technical Systems (MiSTS) lab, Community Research on Identity and Technology (CRIT) lab, and Anthropology of Technology Lab (ATL).

Current research

📌 Informal credentialing with Community Tech Workers (Nov 2023-present)

The online self-presentation, branding, and credentialing practices of affluent white-collar workers is largely understood. However, less is know about how job seekers from low-income and under-resourced communities aspire to demonstrate their informal or nonformal work experiences online for potential employers. This project examines the informal credentialing practices of community tech workers (CTWs) in Detroit’s eastside.

📌 Influencers and self-employment (Nov 2023-present)

Statistics suggest that a growing number of children and young adults are interested in becoming influencers, and many U.S. workers engage in self-employed forms of work in creative industries. This project aims to understand the ways influencers may be relevant or impactful to people’s self-employment interests and aspirations.

📌 Lettersmith (Jan 2023-present)

Professional writing tools such as Lettersmith can be beneficial for aiding job seekers and students in their job search and application process. This research project is dedicated to understanding how to better support job seekers with their written communication skills and online self-presentation in the job search process.
